GFMD strategy discussion (0900-1230)

This session was an opportunity for members to discuss a range of issues facing GFMD and the wider media development and journalism support sector.

The discussion was be split into two sessions:

  1. First, an in-person discussion among those attending in Tirana.

  2. Secondly, a hybrid discussion for all members.

0900-1030 - GFMD Strategy breakout groups

FORMAT: In-person only

General members attending the event were invited to join and contribute to the following breakout groups to contribute to GFMD’s 2021-2025 Strategy.

GFMD members present in Tirana volunteered to act as moderators and rapporteurs, whereas members of the GFMD Secretariat took notes to ensure that suggestions are presented and shared at the following session and incorporated into GFMD's strategic plan.

Policy & advocacy

What should be the three main areas of joint policy and advocacy work that GFMD can coordinate and facilitate with its members?

International Official Development Assistance and the role of GFMD: How to achieve 1% of ODA to media development.

Digitial regulation, sustainability of journalism and news, and relationship with big tech: How to position GFMD as the leading policy organisation.

How should GFMD participate in different coalitions and mechanisms such as Media Freedom Coalition Consultative Network, International Civil Society Organization on the Safety of Journalists Coalition, Information & Democracy Forum, The International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), etc?

Where should GFMD take a leading role?

Building GFMD's membership and network:

General members:

  • Which regions and themes within the journalism and media support sector are currently underrepresented among GFMD members?

  • Which organisations should GFMD be actively looking to recruit and engage?

  • How should can the Secretariat and Steering Committee work together to recruit new members?

Affiliate members:

  • How can the Steering Committee and general members work with Secretariat to promote affiliate membership, and recruit affiliate members?

  • How can the Secretariat and Steering Committee best promote the opportunity to general members who may want their partners to become affiliate members?

  • How can GFMD best meet the needs of affiliate members?

Capacity building & services

Designing and delivering capacity building services for members including planning for the next phase of the MediaDev Fundraising Guide and other services for members.

1100-1230 - GFMD 2021 to 2025 Strategy workshop

Venue: meeting room Antigonea 2, Rogner Hotel, Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, Tirana

FORMAT: HYBRID - In-person, Zoom, and recorded. Open to all members and partners.

This workshop was the final stage of drafting the GFMD’s 2021-2025 Strategy.

It aimed to finalise strategic objectives for the Global Forum for Media Development until the end of 2025, drawing on input from the Steering Committee, members, partners, and experts from the wider network.

This Strategic Plan will help to define and focus GFMD’s programmes and core activities over the coming 4 year period.
